二氧化碳麻醉是通過直接或間接的缺氧引起動物死亡的它可以在各種場所使用并可以不同的速度使動物失去意識。要想達到苦、無疼痛的死亡就要在動作(肌肉活動)消失之前喪失意識。但是動作消失并不等同于喪失意識和沒有痛苦。因此只能引起肌肉麻痹而不能使動物喪失意識的藥物不能作為單獨的藥物。二氧化碳法可能使動物在喪失意識之后產生運動活動但這些運動活動只是反射活動不能被動物感知。因此可以獨立的作為方法。  

傳統的斷頭、放血等動物致死方式方法比較殘忍容易對實驗人員的心理產生負面影響；麻醉致死的方法更不可能本身易燃易爆并且有很強的致癌性對實驗人員傷害更大。二氧化碳安全性高也能有效減少實驗動物的疼痛和痛苦。
