The Model 833 Vapor Pressure Osmometeris an effective, easy to use tool for thedetermination of number average molecularweights of any non-volatile solute in the rangeof 100-25,000 Dalton. 

Principles of Operation 

The vapor pressure osmometer operates onthe principle of differential vapor pressurebetween a pure solvent and a solution. Twocarefully matched thermistors are placed in achamber saturated with solvent vapor. Whensolvent is placed on both thermistors, theyassume the same temperature. If a solution isplaced on one of the thermistors,condensation heats the thermistor until thevapor pressure is raised to that of the puresolvent. The change in temperature causes aresistance change in the thermistor. Thischange in resistance is measured by asensitive bridge circuit and displayed on apanel meter, strip chart recorder and/orcomputer terminal. A calibration curve relatesthe change in resistance to the molalconcentration of the solution. 

The Model 833 VPO incorporates manyimprovements over other designs to simplifyand improve molecular weight determinations.The cell and thermistor geometry are designedto minimize dilution of the sample by solventcondensation. This results in much slower"fall-off" and allows a much longer timewindow for readings. The syringes on theModel 833 are mechanically driven to insuremore precise fluid delivery and areindependently heated to minimize anyequilibrium upset when introducing sample.This results in a faster equilibration time(typically 2-5 minutes), better reproducibilityand greatly reduced cycle time per sample

The thermistor design greatly improvesreproducibility between users and removes the"technique" variable of other osmometers.
